This picture reminds me of one very long flight to a firebase. Since we flew to firebases during the day, went to parties in the evening and got mortared at night, we regularly went without much sleep. Flying in helicopters got so routine that sometimes I would fall asleep on the way to a firebase, which I did on this particular morning. At some point I woke up and we continued to fly - for what seemed like a very long time. It was monsoon season and the clouds hung thick over the landscape. The pilot stayed above them. I kept thinking that we should have arrived at the firebase long ago, but we continued to fly. At last we landed - but we were at the wrong firebase. I questioned the pilot who explained that the clouds were so thick that he couldn't land so he had flown around to burn off fuel so that, if we crashed on landing, we would not burn. That was very thoughtful of him. So there we sat on the chopper pad. Since we had an early take-off, I had expected to get to the firebase in time for breakfast - but that was not to be - and I mentioned that fact to a soldier who had flown with us. He reached into his fatigue pockets and pulled out 2 cans of C-rations and shared them with me. It was the act of a true gentleman. The 2 cans were the coveted peaches and pound cake. Belatedly, I send a grateful "thank you" to both the chopper pilots and the gentleman who shared with me one of the most precious possessions in Nam! |
