Don calls this picture "the only protection from behind a small dike in the middle of the night as tracers focused in," because that's what happened.  He was rudely awakened in the middle of the night by tracers and rolled behind a small dike, but one of those tracers found his helmet and knocked it back to his feet.  He says, "but I put it back on still smoking!"
